Kerala Braces for Torrential Rains: Red Alert in Seven Districts, Tourism and Quarrying Curbed

Thiruvananthapuram: Northern Kerala is on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts extremely heavy rainfall across several districts. Red alerts have been issued for Monday in seven districts — Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod — signalling a heightened risk of downpours and potential flooding.

Over the next three hours, moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds up to 40 km/h is expected in isolated areas of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode.

Orange alerts have been sounded in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad, while Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam remain under yellow alert.

In anticipation of severe weather, authorities have imposed strict restrictions across northern districts. Quarry operations have been suspended in Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, and Idukki, while tourist destinations in Kasaragod and Kannur face temporary closure. In Idukki, all adventure tourism activities including kayaking, rafting, coracle rides, and trekking are banned.

Wayanad officials have urged residents to stay away from rivers and waterlogged areas and to avoid non-essential travel as a precautionary measure. With rain expected to intensify, the state remains on high alert for possible landslides and flash floods.
