The Kerala government has granted approval for setting up liquor lounges within the state’s major IT parks, aiming to modernize the workplace experience and attract more business and tourism. The move is part of a broader strategy to enhance Kerala’s global image as a business-friendly destination.
Key Features of the New Policy:
- Exclusive Access: The liquor lounges will be strictly for IT park employees and authorized guests only, keeping public access restricted to maintain security and purpose.
- Operational Hours: Lounges can function from 12 PM to 12 AM, aligning with professional schedules.
- Licensing & Cost: Only IT park developers can apply for the special Foreign Liquor IT Park Lounge Licence, with an annual fee of ₹10 lakh.
- Design & Safety: Lounges must operate from separate buildings within the park premises, with independent entry and exit points, clearly demarcated from office areas.
- Dry Days Rule: Alcohol service will be strictly prohibited on designated dry days, including the first of every month and any other government-notified holidays.
This policy is applicable to Technopark (Thiruvananthapuram), Infopark (Kochi), Cyberpark (Kozhikode), and other similar IT hubs including SmartCity Kochi.
The government believes the initiative will help in hosting international conferences, MICE events (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and attract more global investors and talent. However, the move has sparked some debate, with critics questioning the appropriateness of alcohol in professional environments.
Officials argue that this is a measured and modern approach, balancing economic development with social responsibility.
