Kozhikode: In a rare and alarming case, a 39-year-old woman from Kozhikode has succumbed to Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM), a fatal brain infection caused by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri. The disease, which primarily affects children and young adults, has raised serious concerns as it is rarely reported in older individuals.
Health officials are closely monitoring the situation, as PAM is known for its rapid progression and high fatality rate. The infection is usually contracted through contaminated water entering the body via the nose, particularly in warm freshwater sources like lakes and ponds.
This incident has prompted authorities to issue public health advisories, urging people to take precautions while swimming or engaging in water activities. Medical experts stress the need for early detection and awareness to prevent further cases of this deadly disease.
