K. Surendran Condoles the Demise of Poet Narayanan Kurup

Former BJP Kerala State President K. Surendran has expressed deep condolences on the passing of noted poet Narayanan Kurup.

In his condolence message, Surendran said that Narayanan Kurup was a poet who consistently fought against social and political evils through his writings, blending humour with sharp criticism in his poetry. He noted that the poet used his verses to challenge injustices, including those witnessed during the Emergency and other adverse political and social developments.

Surendran described Kurup’s literary style as a rare synthesis of tradition and modernity in Malayalam poetry. He said that although the poet was associated with communist ideology in his early years, he later distanced himself after recognising its shortcomings and subsequently aligned himself with nationalist movements.

He also recalled Narayanan Kurup’s long tenure as president of Tapasya Kala Sahitya Vedi and his close association with various national movements.

Highlighting the poet’s incisive critical voice, Surendran said that many had experienced the force of Kurup’s criticism through both his poetry and literary reviews. At the same time, he authored numerous poems that delighted children and reflected his versatility as a writer.

Paying tribute, Surendran said that Narayanan Kurup wielded words as a weapon against injustice, corruption and wrongdoing, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Malayalam literature.
