New Delhi: In a historic development, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has been appointed as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will officially assume office on May 14, following the retirement of current Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna on May 13.
Justice Gavai will become only the second Chief Justice from the Dalit community, after Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, marking a significant milestone in the judiciary’s pursuit of inclusivity.
Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai began his legal journey under the mentorship of the late Justice R.S. Bhosale, a former Advocate General and High Court Judge. After practicing independently at the Bombay High Court from 1987 to 1990, primarily at the Nagpur Bench, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court in 2005.
In 2019, Justice Gavai was elevated to the Supreme Court, and now, with his latest appointment, he prepares to lead the highest judicial body in the country.
