India Overtakes China as Top Source of International Students in the US

India has officially surpassed China as the leading country for sending international students to the United States, according to the latest data for the 2023-24 academic year. India topped the list with the highest number of student enrollments, marking a significant shift in global student mobility. China, once the dominant source, now holds second place, followed by South Korea, Canada, and Taiwan.

This change highlights the growing trend of Indian students choosing the U.S. for higher education, driven by diverse academic opportunities, particularly in STEM fields. It also reflects broader shifts in international student trends, with Indian students benefiting from a 60% increase in U.S. student visas issued from 2021 to 2022.

The influx of Indian students has had a positive impact on the U.S. economy, contributing an estimated $50 billion in 2023 alone. As Indian students continue to make their mark in the U.S. educational landscape, the trend is expected to accelerate, further strengthening the educational ties between the two countries.
