Heavy Rains Lash Kerala: Orange Alert in 2 Districts, Yellow Alert in 8 Districts

Kerala braces for intense monsoon showers as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Kannur and Kasaragod, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall (12–20 cm) today. Additionally, a Yellow Alert is in place for Alappuzha (Kuttanad), Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, and Palakkad, with expected rainfall between 7–11 cm. These alerts remain active from 8:30 AM today until 8:30 AM tomorrow.

As a precautionary measure, schools, colleges, anganwadis, tuition centers, and madrasas in Kannur and Kasaragod have been shut for the day. Similar closures are in effect for Kuttanad (Alappuzha taluk) and relief-camp schools in Kottayam. However, scheduled exams will be conducted as planned.

The IMD has also warned of strong coastal winds (50–60 km/h) and high sea waves (up to 3.5 meters), prompting officials to urge fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea. Residents, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas, are advised to remain cautious and limit travel.

With widespread showers and thunderstorms expected to continue across the state, authorities are on high alert and emergency preparedness measures are underway.
