Green Energy Corridor to boost India’s renewable energy capacity: UN climate chief

New Delhi: The Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) scheme will help India utilise its rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity and deliver economic and social benefits, UN climate chief Simon Stiell said on Thursday.

The Union Cabinet approved the GEC-III scheme on Wednesday. The initiative aims to develop an intra-state transmission network equipped with battery storage facilities to evacuate 135 GW of renewable energy.

The project is also expected to reduce the curtailment of renewable power, a situation in which grid operators limit electricity generation to maintain grid stability.

Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said the initiative would help meet the country’s growing energy needs, support economic growth and further strengthen India’s position in solar energy.
