Vatican City: A sea of mourners from across the globe is pouring into the Vatican to bid an emotional farewell to Pope Francis, whose passing has deeply moved millions. The late Pope’s body lies in state at the iconic St. Peter’s Basilica, where thousands are offering their final homage.
The funeral ceremony is set to take place on Saturday at 1:30 PM IST at the revered Basilica of St. Mary Major, just outside Vatican City. Heads of state, global dignitaries, and religious leaders are expected to gather in honor of the beloved spiritual figure.
In a touching gesture, the Vatican has announced that the final opportunity to pay respects before the funeral will be given to a group of the underprivileged — a nod to the Pope’s lifelong compassion for the marginalized.
India will be represented by President Droupadi Murmu, who is scheduled to arrive in Rome today. She will visit St. Peter’s Basilica to pay her respects and will attend the burial ceremony on Saturday. As a mark of respect, the Government of India has declared a day of national mourning on the day of the funeral.
