Kochi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has tightened its grip on industrialist and film producer Gokulam Gopalan, issuing yet another summons in connection with alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Gopalan has been asked to appear for questioning on April 22, either in person or through an authorized representative.
This comes after an earlier marathon six-hour interrogation, during which ED officials examined key documents and recorded his statements. Preliminary findings have flagged potential FEMA violations involving a staggering ₹595 crore, with investigators now probing the possibility of even larger irregularities.
The ED is zeroing in on funds allegedly funneled into India from overseas in breach of FEMA regulations and examining how the Gokulam Group utilized this money. Raids were recently conducted at multiple group offices, including locations in Kozhikode and Chennai.
According to sources, the group is suspected of collecting funds from NRIs in violation of forex laws. The ED’s ongoing crackdown has gained national attention, especially as it unfolds against the backdrop of controversies surrounding the high-profile film Empuraan.
