Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has expressed concern over girls aged 13 and 14 becoming mothers, stressing that children at this age should be pursuing education and preparing for their future.
Speaking at a programme organised at Maharishi University of Information Technology in Lucknow, Patel called for a change in societal attitudes towards girls and early pregnancy.
She said young adolescents were being burdened with the responsibilities of motherhood at an age when they should be focusing on their studies and personal development.
“Girls aged 13–14 should be studying and moving forward in life. Instead, we place a child in their arms. What kind of mindset is this?” she asked.
Referring to cases involving young girls living in orphanages and boys facing imprisonment over their actions, the Governor highlighted the need to address the circumstances that lead to early pregnancies among adolescents.
Patel’s remarks underscored the importance of protecting young girls, supporting their education and encouraging greater social awareness about teenage pregnancy.
