Doctors in Delhi have performed what they described as the world’s first active robot-assisted knee replacement using a non-metallic ceramic implant, marking a significant development in joint replacement surgery.
The procedure combined an active robotic surgical system with a ceramic knee implant instead of a conventional metal-based implant, according to a statement issued on Wednesday.
Doctors said the procedure could open up new possibilities in knee replacement surgery by combining robotic precision with non-metallic implant technology.
Dr Sujoy Bhattacharjee, Chairman and Chief of the Max Institute of Robotic Joint Replacement at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, and German orthopaedic surgeon Prof Dr Michael Wagner discussed the procedure at a press conference in New Delhi.
The doctors described the procedure as a first-of-its-kind advancement involving active robotic assistance and a non-metallic ceramic knee replacement.
