Thiruvananthapuram: Crimes against women and children, including rape and serious POCSO cases, declined in Kerala during the first 100 days of the state government’s Operation Toofan, while drug-related cases and seizures increased significantly, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said on Wednesday.
According to a statement issued to mark 100 days of ‘Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt’, the total number of cases registered against women and children fell from 13,631 during the corresponding period last year to 13,371 this year, registering a decline of 1.9 per cent.
Rape cases declined from 740 to 593, marking a 19.9 per cent decrease. Similarly, serious cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act fell from 595 to 514, a decline of 13.6 per cent.
The minister said the figures reflected the government’s efforts to strengthen law enforcement and curb crimes against women and children.
