New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of conspiring to keep Gen Z voters off the electoral rolls.
The opposition party also alleged that young voters were being prevented from getting enrolled in the electoral process and used the phrase “loot-us” in reference to the lotus, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s election symbol.
In a post on X, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said legal opinion and past precedent were clear that first-time voters’ names were included in the formal electoral roll only after the annual Special Summary Revision (SSR).
The Congress has been raising concerns over the delay in the 2026-27 SSR and its impact on the enrolment of first-time voters. The Election Commission, meanwhile, has said eligible citizens can register through Form 6 and that electoral rolls can be updated through the continuous updation process.
Ramesh’s remarks come amid an ongoing political dispute between the Congress and the Election Commission over the revision and enrolment of voters, particularly first-time voters.
