The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to increase the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court of India from 34 to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
Announcing the decision, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that a bill to effect the change will be introduced in the next session of Parliament.
Currently, the apex court has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges, but two positions remain vacant. The proposed increase aims to address the growing workload and pendency of cases in the top court.
The move is expected to enhance the efficiency of the judicial system by enabling faster disposal of cases.
