BJP Calls 12-Hour Bengal Bandh Amid Nabanna Abhijan Clashes

Kolkata, West Bengal: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a 12-hour statewide bandh on August 28, 2024, following intense clashes between protesters and police during the “Nabanna Abhijan” rally. The protest, spearheaded by the Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj, demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Chaos erupted in the streets of Kolkata as police deployed water cannons, tear gas, and lathi charges to control the demonstrators, resulting in over 200 arrests. In response to what they deem an excessive crackdown on a peaceful protest, the BJP called for a bandh from 6 AM to 6 PM. While the bandh caused significant disruptions, essential services remained operational.

This event has intensified political tensions in the state, with both sides trading accusations over the use of force and the handling of the situation.
