Paliyekkara Toll Collection Stays Suspended; High Court Extends Ban Amid Safety Concerns

Kochi: Motorists using the national highway at Paliyekkara will not have to pay tolls this month, as the Kerala High Court has extended its interim ban on toll collection.

The decision came after the District Collector’s report flagged serious safety concerns, noting that the Muringoor service road collapse has not been fully repaired and that similar risks exist at other stretches where road works are ongoing. The court said the issue will be reviewed again on Tuesday.

Toll collection was first suspended a month ago due to heavy traffic snarls. Though the court had hinted at a possible resumption under conditions, the fresh service road collapse forced a rethink.

The Collector’s report also pointed out unattended pits, missing barricades, and underpass construction hazards, warning that travelers face significant safety risks.

Citing these findings, the court chose to prioritize public safety over revenue, keeping the toll ban in place. Meanwhile, the National Highways Authority argued that it is complying with safety directions and urged the court to allow toll resumption.
