Kerala Confirms Two More Deaths from Rare Brain Infection; Cases Climb to 62, Death Toll Hits 19

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is facing a growing health scare as two more people have died of amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare but often fatal brain infection, pushing this year’s death toll to 19.

The latest victims a 52-year-old woman from Thiruvananthapuram and a 91-year-old man from Kollam passed away on September 11, with lab results later confirming the cause.

So far, the state has recorded 62 confirmed cases of the infection this year, with two new cases reported just yesterday, according to the Health Department.

In response to the rising numbers, authorities have rolled out stringent safety protocols for swimming pools, warning that any breach of the Public Health Act will attract tough legal action. The rules apply to both public and private pools across the state.
