Kerala High Court to Hear Rapper Vedan’s Anticipatory Bail Plea in Rape Case Today

Kochi: The Kerala High Court is set to hear today the anticipatory bail application of rapper Vedan, who faces a rape case filed by a young doctor.

The court had earlier directed the police not to arrest Vedan until Monday, when the petition would come up for detailed hearing. During the last session, the complainant’s counsel requested more time to submit additional documents opposing the bail plea, leading to the adjournment.

The complainant has alleged that Vedan engaged in a sexual relationship with her under the promise of marriage but later withdrew from the commitment. She reiterated this before the court. However, the court noted that a promise of marriage alone may not constitute a criminal offence.

The alleged incidents are said to have taken place between August 2021 and March 2023 at multiple locations. According to the complaint, the two first connected via Instagram, after which Vedan allegedly visited her Kozhikode residence and assaulted her.

A case has been registered by the Thrikkakara police in Kochi, who have also stated that Vedan is currently absconding. Search efforts are ongoing.
