Kerala Student’s Electrocution Tragedy: Headmistress Suspended, Govt Pledges ₹3 Lakh Aid and New Home for Bereaved Family

Thiruvananthapuram – In response to the shocking death of Mithun, a student who was electrocuted at a school in Thevalakkara, Kollam, Kerala’s Education Minister V. Sivankutty has announced a series of urgent actions, including the suspension of the school’s headmistress and a ₹3 lakh emergency relief package for the grieving family.

The minister directed the school management to immediately suspend the headmistress, warning that the government would take direct action if the order is ignored. A show-cause notice has also been served to both the school management and Assistant Educational Officer (AEO) Antony Peter, who are required to respond within three days.

Highlighting the family’s dire financial condition, Minister Sivankutty announced that a new house would be built for them through the state’s Scouts and Guides unit. He also confirmed that Mithun’s younger brother would be given a full waiver of school exam fees up to Class 12.

“No amount of compensation can bring back a lost life,” Sivankutty said emotionally, adding that Mithun was “a son of Kerala,” and the government will extend every possible support.

The minister revealed that a detailed report on the incident had been submitted by the Director of General Education and reviewed by top education officials. He stressed that all schools had previously been instructed to ensure building safety before the start of the academic year, and warned against the complacency of those who assume pay without performance.

This tragedy has sent shockwaves across the state, with calls growing louder for stronger accountability and infrastructure checks in educational institutions.
