Heavy rains have been lashing Kerala’s Malabar region since Wednesday afternoon, causing severe disruptions across Kozhikode and neighboring districts. The sudden surge in rainfall led to rising water levels in the Kadantharapuzha area of Maruthonkara panchayat, forcing the evacuation of 49 people from 16 families to relief camps. Authorities have issued warnings to residents along the Vilangad riverbanks to relocate as a precaution.
Fears of a potential landslip near Pasukkadavu emerged after water levels rose sharply at Kadantharapuzha and Chadayanthodu. In response, heavy vehicle traffic on the Thamarassery and Kuttiady Ghat Roads has been suspended, allowing only emergency services.
In Wayanad, the district administration has banned entry to the vulnerable Mundakkai–Chooralmala region, citing the risk of landslides due to unstable soil from last year’s debris. All nearby plantations have also been declared off-limits.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alerts in districts including Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, while yellow alerts are in effect in Malappuram, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Palakkad. Squally winds up to 65 km/h have been forecast along the coast and Arabian Sea, prompting a stern warning to fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea.
As a safety measure, all educational institutions—including schools, colleges, professional centers, madrasas, Anganwadis, and tuition centers—have been closed in Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Thrissur.
Residents are urged to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, especially through Ghat roads, and follow official advisories as the region braces for continued rainfall through the weekend.
