Nipah Scare Deepens in Palakkad: Deceased Patient’s Travel History Sparks Widespread Containment Measures

Palakkad is on high alert after the death of a 57-year-old man from the Nipah virus, with health officials expressing serious concern over his extensive travel on KSRTC buses, significantly raising the risk of community transmission. So far, 46 people — including his wife, children, and grandchildren — have been identified as primary contacts. In a precautionary move, the school attended by his grandchildren has been shut down. The patient had sought treatment at three private hospitals before passing away at a facility in Perinthalmanna, prompting fears that the contact list may expand further. Two close family members showing fever symptoms have been isolated. In response, the health department has urged the public, particularly in Palakkad and Malappuram, to avoid unnecessary hospital visits. Hospitals have been instructed to limit bystanders to one per patient, and masks have been made mandatory for all. Containment zones have been declared in 17 wards across Kumaramputhur, Karakkurissi, Mannarkkad, and Karimpuzha, where strict restrictions are in place. Shops may operate only between 8 AM and 6 PM, educational institutions are to remain closed, and public gatherings are banned. Entry of outsiders into these zones is restricted, and residents must inform local authorities before hosting any events like weddings or funerals.
