COVID-19 Cases Surge Across India: Active Tally Hits 5,364, Kerala Tops Chart with 1,679 Infections

India is witnessing a fresh spike in COVID-19 cases, with active infections climbing to 5,364 as of June 6, 2025 — an increase of nearly 500 cases in just 24 hours. Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases at 1,679, followed by Delhi (562), Maharashtra (548), and West Bengal (538), signaling a regional resurgence of the virus.

Despite the uptick, Arunachal Pradesh remains COVID-free, with zero active cases, underscoring the uneven spread of the virus across states.

In a worrying development, four COVID-related deaths have been reported—two from Kerala and one each from Punjab and Karnataka. All fatalities involved elderly individuals with underlying health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and pneumonia.

Health officials have sounded the alarm and are urging citizens to follow COVID-appropriate behavior, including mask usage, regular handwashing, and social distancing. The Ministry of Health is ramping up containment efforts and ensuring healthcare systems remain equipped to handle any surge.

Kerala, the worst-affected state, has intensified its surveillance and safety protocols. The state health department has mandated COVID-19 testing for anyone showing symptoms of influenza-like illnesses or respiratory issues. RT-PCR tests are compulsory for high-risk individuals, especially if they test negative on rapid antigen kits. Hospitals have been directed to isolate symptomatic patients and enforce strict mask protocols for staff, patients, and visitors. Additionally, genome sequencing of all positive samples is being carried out at the National Institute of Virology, Pune, with each district expected to submit at least 15 samples per week.

As the country grapples with this renewed wave, health experts warn that public cooperation and continued vigilance are crucial to containing the spread.
