Containers from Sunken Ship Washed Ashore in Thiruvananthapuram; Recovery Operation Underway

Thiruvananthapuram: A total of 34 containers from a sunken cargo vessel have been washed ashore along the Thiruvananthapuram coast, prompting a coordinated recovery and security operation by local authorities and maritime agencies.

The containers were part of the cargo onboard a ship that reportedly sank off the Kerala coast due to rough sea conditions earlier this month. As tides shifted, several of these containers were pushed toward the shore by strong currents.

Authorities have confirmed that no hazardous or dangerous materials have been found inside the recovered containers so far. However, officials are continuing inspections to ensure safety and environmental compliance.

Plans are now in motion to transport the recovered containers by sea to the Kollam Port, where they will be shifted to customs-designated holding areas for further inspection and documentation. The operation is being overseen by the Coast Guard, Port Department, Customs officials, and local police, with necessary precautions in place to manage maritime traffic and safeguard the coastline.

Residents living near the affected coastal stretch have been advised to stay away from the containers and report any further sightings to authorities. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to locate additional missing containers believed to still be at sea.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the sinking of the vessel and the nature of the cargo it was carrying.
