Kerala’s KFON Hits 1 Lakh Connections, Sets Sights on Digital Inclusion

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s ambitious internet initiative, Kerala Fiber Optic Network (KFON), has reached a landmark milestone by surpassing 1 lakh active internet connections, marking a major leap in the state’s digital revolution.

Launched to bridge the digital divide, KFON provides free high-speed internet to over 11,400 Below Poverty Line (BPL) families and affordable connections to thousands more. Within just two years of its launch by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in June 2023, KFON has grown into Kerala’s largest fiber-optic network.

Celebrating the achievement, KFON Managing Director Dr. Santhosh Babu and IT Special Secretary lauded the project’s rapid progress. With plans underway to expand to 3 lakh connections by the end of the financial year, KFON is on track to become a model for inclusive digital infrastructure in India.

The project also eyes a quadrupled revenue jump, aiming to grow from ₹51 crore in 2023 to ₹230 crore this year. Up next: bringing high-speed internet to remote tribal hamlets, making Kerala a truly connected state.

KFON’s rise reflects Kerala’s commitment to digital equity and accessibility for all — a model the rest of the country may soon follow.
