Kerala Braces for Scattered Showers, Lightning and Strong Winds; Coastal High Wave Alert in Place

Kerala continues to experience scattered rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts moderate showers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h in multiple districts including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Wayanad. With the southwest monsoon likely to make landfall over the South Andaman Sea, southeast Bay of Bengal, and parts of the Nicobar Islands by May 15, heavier rainfall is anticipated by the end of the week, particularly on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, the National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a high wave (Kallakkadal) alert for Kerala’s coastal belt, warning of sea waves between 0.5 to 0.9 meters in regions spanning Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod until 11:30 PM on May 8. Fishermen and coastal residents have been advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid venturing into the sea, and refrain from all beachside activities as a preventive measure against potential sea intrusion and flooding.
