Indian Railways Cracks Down on Waitlisted Passengers in Sleeper and AC Coaches from May 1

New Delhi: In a bold move to improve passenger comfort, Indian Railways has announced a new policy starting May 1, which will prohibit passengers with waitlisted tickets from boarding Sleeper and AC coaches. The change is designed to enhance the experience for travelers with confirmed tickets and ensure smooth travel operations.

Under the new rule, passengers holding waitlisted tickets purchased at ticket counters will now only be allowed to travel in General Class coaches. This decision comes after frequent complaints that waitlisted passengers were occupying reserved coaches, causing inconvenience for those with confirmed reservations.

Currently, online waitlisted tickets booked through IRCTC are automatically canceled and refunded if not confirmed before the journey. However, the same system does not apply to offline tickets, leading to overcrowding in reserved coaches. The new regulation will address this issue by ensuring that waitlisted passengers will have to travel in General Class.

The new rule gives Ticket Checkers (TTEs) the authority to either fine or re-seat waitlisted passengers in General Class if they are found in reserved coaches. This measure is expected to reduce conflicts and overcrowding, offering a more seamless journey for those with confirmed tickets.

Captain Shashi Kiran, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, stated that the decision aims to minimize disruptions and improve the overall travel experience for passengers. The policy comes after numerous reports of disputes caused by waitlisted passengers occupying reserved seats.

This move is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to streamline operations and ensure a more comfortable and hassle-free experience for all passengers.
