In a significant move aimed at easing healthcare costs for the elderly, the Indian government has expanded its flagship Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). All senior citizens aged 70 and above are now eligible for ₹5 lakh in annual health insurance coverage, regardless of their income or social status. This extension, which will benefit around 6 crore seniors from 4.5 crore families, aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of providing universal healthcare.
Key Features of the Expanded Coverage:
Distinct Health Card: Eligible seniors will receive a unique health card, granting them easier access to services.
Additional Coverage for Families: Families already enrolled in Ayushman Bharat will receive an extra ₹5 lakh in coverage specifically for their senior members.
Flexibility with Existing Insurance: Seniors already covered by other public or private health schemes can choose between those plans and the Ayushman Bharat coverage.
This expansion is designed to reduce the financial burden on elderly citizens, as they tend to face rising healthcare costs with age
