The West Bengal government has decided to include the life and contributions of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee in school textbooks while removing the chapter on the Singur anti-land acquisition movement, State School Education Minister Deepak Barman said on Wednesday.
The revised syllabus, prepared by a committee that has completed its work, will give greater importance to the history of West Bengal and its prominent personalities, the minister told reporters.
According to Barman, Mookerjee’s life and contributions will be briefly introduced in every textbook as part of the curriculum changes.
The proposed revisions will also see the removal of the chapter dealing with the Singur movement, which opposed land acquisition for an industrial project in the state.
