Centre Directs States to Enforce Ban on Reuse of Single-Use Medical Devices

The Centre has directed all states and Union Territories to strictly enforce the ban on reusing single-use medical devices and disposable surgical items in public and private healthcare facilities, citing concerns over infection risks and patient safety.

In a letter dated October 16, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) flagged reports that some private and corporate hospitals were sterilising and reusing medical equipment designed for one-time use.

The practice was reportedly observed in critical specialities, including cardiology, nephrology, oncology, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, and neurosurgery.

The DGHS warned that such devices must not be reused after a procedure, as doing so could expose patients to infections and other health risks. It also highlighted concerns that patients were sometimes charged the full cost of equipment that had already been used.

The Centre has called for strict compliance with the existing ban to safeguard patients and ensure responsible healthcare practices.
