Patna: Rising water levels in the Gandak River led to breaches at two embankment points in Bihar’s Gopalganj and Saran districts on Wednesday, officials said.
The Water Resources Department reported that a section of the Bandhauli-Sheetalpur-Faizullahpur Zamindari Bund in Baikunthpur block of Gopalganj gave way early in the day. The breach, located near Sheetalpur village along the right main embankment, was around six metres wide.
Officials warned that floodwater could enter low-lying areas of Parsauni, Sheetalpur and Pakhan villages, potentially affecting road connectivity.
The breaches followed heavy water releases from barrages, while seepage and piping were reported at several other locations, putting additional pressure on the flood-control infrastructure.
The department said the main embankment along the Saran side remained intact. Rescue and repair teams are monitoring vulnerable stretches and taking measures to control the situation.
