New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, with the two leaders reviewing bilateral relations and reaffirming the need for a long-term strategic approach to ties.
The meeting marked a discussion on the steady progress in India-China relations since their previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025.
Modi stressed that differences between the two countries should not turn into disputes and said bilateral ties must be guided by mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.
The Prime Minister underlined that peace and tranquillity in the border areas remained essential for the continued development of relations. He also called for adherence to existing agreements and understandings on border-related issues.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to finding a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question, taking into account the broader political perspective of bilateral relations and the long-term interests of both countries.
They also discussed strengthening people-to-people ties, cultural exchanges, business linkages and mobility between India and China.
On economic and trade relations, Modi and Xi emphasised the need to address concerns, including structural trade imbalances and supply chain issues, while promoting meaningful and predictable market access.
The leaders agreed to expand common ground on regional and global issues and work together to address emerging challenges.
Modi also appreciated China’s support for India’s BRICS chairship and its contribution to the success of the BRICS Summit 2026.
