DRI Busts Gold-Smuggling Syndicate, Recovers Rs 1.10 Crore Gold from Treadmill

Mumbai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has uncovered an alleged international gold-smuggling network and seized gold worth Rs 1.10 crore that was concealed inside an imported treadmill in Mumbai, officials said.

A Chinese national and a person linked to an importing company have been arrested in connection with the case, according to the officials.

The investigation revealed that a group of Chinese nationals allegedly worked with Indian associates to bring gold into the country by hiding it inside machinery imported through legitimate commercial channels, the DRI said.

Officials said the suspected syndicate used imported equipment as a cover to evade customs checks and illegally bring gold into India.

The agency is continuing its investigation to identify other members of the network and determine the extent of the smuggling operation.
