PM Modi pays tribute to Bengali cinema legend Uttam Kumar on birth centenary

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tribute to legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar on his birth centenary, remembering the iconic performer for his enduring contribution to Indian cinema.

In a post on X, Modi described Uttam Kumar as a legend whose timeless performances continue to resonate with audiences across generations.

“Mahanayak Uttam Kumar… A legend whose timeless performances connect with people across generations. Tributes on his birth centenary,” the Prime Minister said.

Uttam Kumar, born Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay on September 3, 1926, became one of the most celebrated figures in Bengali cinema. He passed away on July 24, 1980, at the age of 53.

Widely regarded as the Mahanayak (Great Hero) of Bengali cinema, Uttam Kumar’s performances and screen presence continue to hold a lasting place in the cultural memory of generations of filmgoers.
