New Delhi: Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Friday called for greater unity and harmony while remembering the suffering caused by the Partition of India.
Addressing a national seminar on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day organised by the University of Delhi’s Centre for Independence and Partition Studies in association with the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), he described Partition as one of the most tragic and dehumanising chapters in India’s history.
Speaking on the theme ‘The Partition of India – A Saga of Displacement, Separation and Resettlement’, Radhakrishnan said remembering Partition was not about reopening old wounds but about learning from the past and preventing similar tragedies.
He highlighted the unprecedented mass migration and loss of lives during Partition and said its consequences continue to influence India’s defence policy, national security and relations with neighbouring countries.
The Vice-President also praised the University of Delhi for establishing the Centre in 2023 and documenting oral testimonies of more than 100 Partition survivors. He stressed that younger generations must understand the truth of Partition and learn from its history.
