New Delhi: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday said history would remember former prime minister Manmohan Singh as a quiet, gentle and highly consequential leader, days after the Supreme Court gave him a clean chit in the coal block allocation case.
Sonia Gandhi said Singh’s record of integrity and accountability stood in sharp contrast to the manner in which the Narendra Modi government has functioned.
In a statement, the Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson described the Supreme Court judgment as bringing to an end what she termed one of the most tragic episodes in India’s public discourse — the “witch-hunt” against Singh, whom she described as a person of exceptional probity and integrity.
Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi said that since he was now “forgiving” students who had attacked him, he could perhaps use the opportunity to forgive himself for what she called his “undignified slander” against Singh.
She said the court’s decision reaffirmed the former prime minister’s integrity and brought closure to allegations that had cast a shadow over his tenure.
