Mizoram Natural History Museum Declared India’s 21st Designated Biodiversity Repository

New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has officially designated the Natural History Museum (NHM) in Mizoram as the country’s 21st designated repository under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

The notification, issued on June 19, 2026, follows the recommendation of the National Biodiversity Authority and the Centre’s examination of the proposal, according to a senior ministry official.

Designated repositories play a crucial role in India’s biodiversity conservation framework by preserving authenticated biological specimens collected under the provisions of the Biological Diversity Act. These repositories serve as scientific reference centres for research, conservation, education, and policy-making.

With this recognition, the Natural History Museum in Mizoram joins a national network of institutions entrusted with safeguarding India’s rich biological heritage and supporting biodiversity research across the country.
