Colombo: The foundation stone for a major India-funded housing project was laid in Sri Lanka’s Badulla district on Monday, marking the beginning of the fourth phase of the Indian Housing Project aimed at improving living conditions for plantation communities.
According to the Indian High Commission in Colombo, the project is being implemented with grant assistance of more than ₹18 billion from the Government of India.
The latest phase includes the construction of 57 housing units at the Cannavarella Plantation Estate in Badulla. Overall, the project will provide more than 10,000 houses for plantation families across six provinces in Sri Lanka.
The Indian Housing Project is one of India’s key development initiatives in Sri Lanka, focusing on providing safe and permanent housing for economically disadvantaged plantation workers and strengthening bilateral development cooperation between the two countries.
