Argentina captain Lionel Messi etched his name further into football history by becoming the highest goal scorer in FIFA World Cup history during Argentina’s match against Austria.
Messi scored in the 38th minute of the game, taking his World Cup tally to 17 goals and surpassing the previous record held by former German striker Miroslav Klose.
Klose had held the record with 16 World Cup goals, while Brazilian legend Ronaldo remains third on the all-time list with 15 goals.
Earlier in the match against Austria, Messi missed a penalty in the ninth minute. He had equalled Klose’s record in Argentina’s previous match against Algeria, where he scored a hat-trick.
With his goal against Austria, Messi moved into sole possession of the World Cup scoring record. In the match against Algeria, his hat-trick had also helped him become the player with the most appearances in FIFA World Cup history.
The latest achievement adds another milestone to Messi’s illustrious international career.
