Centre on Alert Over Possible El Nino Impact; Farmers Need Not Panic: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

New Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the Centre has intensified preparations to tackle the possible impact of El Nino and below-normal monsoon conditions in 2026.

During a high-level review meeting in Delhi, Chouhan directed states and districts likely to face low rainfall to ensure special monitoring and quick action. He stressed that contingency plans should be implemented on the ground and not remain limited to paperwork.

The Minister said farmers need not panic as the government is focusing on seed availability, water management, moisture conservation and alternative crop planning. He also noted that reservoir water levels are currently better than normal, providing support for the upcoming Kharif season.

Chouhan further instructed officials to strengthen mobile advisories and timely crop, pest and disease-related information for farmers.
