Action is likely to be taken soon against policemen, including the gunman of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in connection with the alleged assault on KSU and Youth Congress workers during the Nava Kerala Yatra.
According to reports, orders have been issued to suspend five policemen, including gunman Anilkumar, security officer S. Sandeep, and escort policemen Arun, Vipin and Shaiju.
Sources said charges, including attempt to murder, may also be invoked against them. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is expected to seek an explanation from ADGP M R Ajith Kumar regarding the incident. Further action may follow if the explanation is found unsatisfactory.
Meanwhile, Sandeep and Anilkumar have approached the Alappuzha Principal Sessions Court seeking anticipatory bail before Judge Honey M. Varghese.
In their bail plea, the officers stated that their duty was to ensure the chief minister’s security and that they intervened only to control the protest. They also claimed that local police personnel were not present at the spot.
