KANPUR: A probe into an illegal kidney transplant racket in Kanpur has revealed a wider network involving unqualified individuals, private hospitals and possible links across multiple states, police said on Friday.
According to Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal, the investigation found that four key accused—initially believed to be doctors—were actually untrained practitioners. The suspects include a technician, a physiotherapist, a pharmacy operator and a dentist.
The accused, identified as Rohit Tiwari alias Rahul, Amit alias Anurag, Afzal and Vaibhav, are currently absconding.
Officials said at least six illegal kidney transplants have been confirmed so far, including five conducted at Ahuja Hospital and one linked to a MedLife facility. However, investigators suspect the number of such procedures could be higher.
Police said the racket appears to have operated through a coordinated network, raising concerns about regulatory lapses and illegal medical practices. Further investigation is underway to trace the absconding accused and identify others involved.
