Kalpetta: In a powerful testament to resilience and collective care, the first phase of Wayanad’s model rehabilitation township—built for families who survived the devastating Mundakkai–Chooralmala disaster—will be inaugurated tomorrow at Elstone Estate. The township will be formally dedicated to the people by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at 3:30 pm, with State Revenue Minister K Rajan presiding over the ceremony. The ambitious rehabilitation project envisions 410 houses in total, of which 178 homes have been completed in the first phase, prioritising families who lost their homes entirely in the tragedy.
Designed to suit Wayanad’s terrain and climate, each 1,000-square-foot house has been constructed as a single-storey structure with a strong foundation that allows future expansion into a two-storey home. Beyond housing, the township promises a holistic living environment, featuring a health centre, anganwadi, public market, community centre, playgrounds, and essential civic amenities. Once fully realised, the project will provide safe shelter to over 1,662 people—standing as a symbol of hope, recovery, and a new chapter in the lives of disaster-affected families.
