Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is witnessing a sharp rise in ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels, with the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority issuing an Orange Alert in Munnar (Idukki) and Konni (Pathanamthitta) after both regions recorded a UV Index of 8 in the past 24 hours. The alert signals a very high level of UV exposure, posing potential health risks to residents and visitors. Meanwhile, a Yellow Alert has been declared in Kottarakkara (Kollam), Chengannur (Alappuzha), Changanassery (Kottayam), Ollur (Thrissur), Thrithala (Palakkad), Ponnani (Malappuram), Beypore (Kozhikode), and Mananthavady (Wayanad), indicating moderate to high radiation levels across several districts.
Health authorities caution that prolonged exposure to intense UV rays can cause sunburn, skin damage, eye disorders, and other long-term health complications. As per standard classification, a UV Index of 6–7 warrants a Yellow Alert, 8–10 an Orange Alert, and readings above 11 trigger a Red Alert. With UV levels climbing, officials strongly advise the public to avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours and to adopt protective measures such as wearing hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The rising UV index reflects changing atmospheric conditions, underscoring the need for heightened public awareness and precaution.
