Kerala on Heat Alert: UV Index Soars in Multiple Districts, Public Urged to Stay Cautious

Thiruvananthapuram: Rising temperatures across Kerala have triggered a sharp increase in the Ultraviolet (UV) Index, prompting health and disaster management authorities to issue a cautionary alert. In the past 24 hours, Idukki district recorded the highest UV Index at 7, while Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Wayanad reported a UV level of 6, indicating a high risk of UV exposure.

The State Disaster Management Authority warned that prolonged exposure to intense heat and ultraviolet radiation can lead to serious health conditions, including sunstroke, heat exhaustion, dehydration, and sunburn. People working outdoors, along with children and senior citizens, have been advised to take extra precautions.

Authorities noted that UV radiation is most intense between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, urging the public to avoid direct sunlight during these hours as much as possible. Wearing protective clothing, staying well-hydrated, and seeking shade are strongly recommended to minimise health risks as the heatwave-like conditions continue across the state.
