The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed one fatal Nipah virus infection in Bangladesh, triggering fresh health alerts across South Asia. The development comes weeks after two Nipah cases were detected in West Bengal, India, leading to increased surveillance and precautionary measures in the region.
In its assessment, the WHO stated that the risk of international transmission remains low and clarified that there is no recommendation for travel or trade restrictions based on the current situation. Health authorities in Bangladesh have stepped up monitoring, contact tracing, and awareness campaigns, while neighboring countries are keeping a close watch due to the virus’s high mortality rate.
The Nipah virus, a zoonotic disease transmitted from animals to humans, can cause severe neurological and respiratory complications. The WHO has urged countries to stay vigilant, strengthen public health preparedness, and ensure early detection to prevent any further spread.
