Washington: US President Donald Trump has rejected a call from Russian President Vladimir Putin to extend the cap on nuclear weapons deployments, stating that he prefers to negotiate a new agreement to replace the strategic nuclear deployment treaty that recently expired. Trump said the previous treaty no longer reflects present-day security realities and needs a comprehensive overhaul.
Trump indicated that any future agreement should be stronger, more inclusive, and better suited to address modern global threats, potentially involving other nuclear-armed nations as well. Putin had urged an extension of the existing limits to prevent escalation and preserve strategic stability, but Trump’s stance points to a shift toward fresh negotiations, leaving uncertainty over the future of nuclear arms control between the two countries.
