Kerala Assembly Reconvenes Today; Opposition Set to Step Up Heat on Sabarimala Gold Heist and Fund Scam

The Kerala Legislative Assembly will resume its session today after a three-day recess, with political temperatures expected to rise as the opposition prepares to intensify its protests over the alleged Sabarimala gold heist. The House will continue discussions on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s policy address.

Proceedings were disrupted last Friday following vociferous opposition protests on the gold heist issue, leading to the adjournment of the Assembly. With the session resuming, the opposition is likely to raise the matter again, even as suspense remains over whether an adjournment motion notice will be moved.

Minister M.B. Rajesh has accused the opposition of avoiding a detailed debate on the issue, alleging that the House was being stalled without following procedural norms. Countering this, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan alleged that the Chief Minister’s Office was exerting pressure on the Special Investigation Team probing the case and demanded that such interference be brought to an end.

Adding to the political flashpoints, the opposition is also expected to raise the alleged Payyannur Dhanraj Martyrs’ Fund scam. The controversy, sparked by allegations from former CPM Kannur district committee member V. Kunjikrishnan, is likely to sharpen attacks against the CPM and further fuel heated exchanges in the Assembly.
