Pathanamthitta: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has sought seven days’ custody of Rahul Mamkootathil, who was arrested in connection with a rape case. The custody plea will be considered today by the Thiruvalla Judicial First Class Magistrate Court. Rahul is currently lodged at the Mavelikkara Special Sub Jail.
As per the magistrate’s direction, Rahul will be produced before the court today after undergoing a medical examination. The SIT has told the court that custodial interrogation is necessary to collect crucial evidence, including taking the accused to the hotel where the alleged assault took place. The complainant has also alleged that visuals were recorded during the incident, prompting investigators to seek recovery of the mobile phone used. The probe will also extend to financial transactions linked to the case.
The court is expected to hear arguments on Rahul’s bail plea only after a final decision is taken on the custody request. Rahul’s lawyers had filed a bail application soon after his arrest. Rahul has denied the allegations, claiming the case is fabricated with malicious intent to defame him and put him behind bars.
