Thodupuzha: The hill station of Munnar in Idukki district is once again in the grip of intense cold, with temperatures dipping below zero. The lowest temperature was recorded at the Letchmi Estate in Munnar, where the mercury fell to minus one degree Celsius, marking one of the coldest spells of the season.
The sub-zero conditions are largely confined to the interior regions of the tea estates, while residential areas are experiencing comparatively milder cold. However, reports of freezing temperatures have drawn a surge of tourists to Munnar, eager to experience the winter chill. The spike in visitor numbers has led to severe traffic congestion, with long snarls reported up to Adimali in recent days.
Cold conditions are not limited to Munnar alone. Wayanad district is also witnessing unusually low temperatures this season, with the mercury dropping to around 13–14 degrees Celsius. The widespread cold wave has added to the winter charm of Kerala’s high ranges, even as authorities and locals brace for the challenges posed by the extreme weather.
